Since the God who called you is holy—completely set apart, pure, without any moral compromise—your whole life should reflect that same holiness.
Peter isn't talking about moral perfection but about direction and allegiance. Holiness means being set apart for God's purposes. Your speech, your relationships, your work, your private thoughts—all of it should be oriented toward honoring Him.

The standard of Christian ethical conduct derives from God's own holiness: just as the God who called them into covenant is intrinsically holy, so they must embody holiness comprehensively in their lived conduct.
Peter invokes the imitatio Dei—imitation of God—as the ethical norm; this Platonic-inflected principle, Christianized in the Sermon on the Mount ('Be perfect as your Father is perfect'), now becomes the measure by which scattered diaspora communities conduct themselves amid hostile societies.

The Holiness Code of Leviticus (chapters 17-26) contains the specific scriptural warrant Peter cites; the repeated refrain 'be holy because I am holy' becomes, in Christian ethical interpretation, an imperative not reserved for priests but extending to the entire covenant community.
13Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober-minded. Set your hope fully on the grace to be given you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
