John opens with a prologue echoing the Fourth Gospel's language of 'the beginning,' declaring firsthand sensory witness—heard, seen, gazed upon, touched—of the Word of life. The purpose is fellowship (koinōnia) with the apostolic community and through it with the Father and Son. The chapter establishes the epistle's central ethical test: walking in the light versus walking in darkness. Claiming fellowship with God while walking in darkness is branded as lying, while confessing sins engages God's faithfulness (pistos) and justice (dikaios) in purification through Christ's blood.
The epistle addresses a community fractured by the departure of proto-Gnostic secessionists (cf. 2:19) who claimed enlightenment while disregarding ethical behavior. John's insistence on the physical, tangible reality of Christ directly counters Docetic Christologies that denied the genuine incarnation.
