Crossed Hands

Language and setting

This verse addresses a potential complication: if Joseph has more children, they don't get individual tribal status. Instead, they are absorbed into the tribal inheritance of Ephraim or Manasseh. This preserves the number twelve tribes (a theologically significant number representing the people as a whole) by ensuring Jacob's adoption creates exactly two new tribes, not an indeterminate number.
