Joseph introduces his first dream, inviting his brothers to listen to what he has experienced.

Language and setting

The imperative 'shim'u na'—listen, please—employs the softening particle na', suggesting either youthful courtesy or, as some commentators propose, obliviousness to the danger inherent in his forthcoming words. The act of soliciting his brothers' attention to recount a dream in which he envisions his superiority represents a critical failure in political acumen; Joseph possesses interpretive gifts but not yet the wisdom to understand audience, context, or consequence.

7We were binding sheaves of grain in the field, and suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around and bowed down to mine.”

8“Do you intend to reign over us?” his brothers asked. “Will you actually rule us?” So they hated him even more because of his dream and his statements.
