The stranger directs Joseph toward Dothan, where the brothers have moved, and Joseph pursues them—unknowingly moving closer to danger.

Language and setting

The man's response—'They have moved on from here'—and his report that he 'heard them say, Let us go to Dothan' provides crucial narrative information. Dothan lay north of Shechem, removing Joseph further from easy return to his father's household. The brothers' relocation may suggest either ordinary pastoral movement following grazing conditions or, as some commentators propose, a deliberate removal to a location where they could act without witnesses. Joseph's obedience in setting out after them (vayayelekh Yosef acharei akhav) shows persistent filial duty even as the narrative reader perceives the trap closing. The angel-like function of the stranger culminates here: he has provided information that guarantees Joseph's confrontation with his brothers.
