Esau also married Basemath, who was the daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth. This marriage actually connected Esau to Abraham's line through Ishmael, Isaac's half-brother.
It's interesting that one of Esau's three wives came from Ishmael's family. In a way, this showed that Esau maintained some connection to his grandfather Abraham's extended family, even though he was going his own direction spiritually. The genealogy is showing you the complex web of relationships in this ancient world.

This detail reminds you that even though Esau chose a different path than Jacob, he wasn't completely severed from the family of promise. The connections remained, even as the lines diverged. God's story was moving forward through Jacob, but Esau and his descendants weren't abandoned by God, either.
The third wife, Basemath, was the daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth, thus connecting Esau's line to the Ishmaelite peoples through marriage.
This connection is theologically weighted: Ishmael was Abraham's firstborn son, cast out in favor of Isaac (21:8-21). Basemath's lineage through Ishmael and her brother Nebaioth (who appears in trade networks mentioned in Isaiah 60:7) suggests that intermarriage with Ishmael's descendants was normalized among the patriarchal families. This genealogical link, preserved in the text, may reflect actual tribal confederations or trade relationships during the Iron Age settlement period, when Edomite, Ishmaelite, and Israelite groups coexisted.
The same genealogical tradition, drawing on authentic records of marriage alliances that would have been preserved in tribal memory.
The inclusion of an Ishmaelite connection demonstrates that though Jacob was chosen, the broader Abrahamic family maintained social and matrimonial bonds. This prevents a reading of the narrative as utterly divisive, suggesting instead a complex kinship network across the ancient Near Eastern peoples descended from Abraham.
