Language and setting

The substitution of goats for game (צִיד) is ingenious but requires explanation: goat meat, properly prepared, could approximate the flavor profile of game animals in antiquity. Rebekah's specific request for 'two choice young goats' (שְׁנֵי גְדָיֵי עִזִּים טוֹבִים) suggests her knowledge of which animals would best serve her deception. The domestic flock, unlike wild game, is immediately available and requires no hunting expedition—critical for executing the plan while Esau is away. This substitution is the physical kernel of the deception: it requires culinary skill to make the domestic taste like the wild, which Rebekah possesses.

Significance

The substitution of goats for game represents the first of several substitutions in this narrative (Jacob for Esau, domesticated for wild).
