That night they execute their plan—the older daughter gets Lot drunk and sleeps with him without his knowledge or consent. It happens exactly as they planned.

Why it's here

Lot is so drunk he has no awareness of what's happening. The daughter acts in the darkness, taking advantage of his condition. He's completely unaware. This is a scene of deception and violation, and the fact that the text mentions his lack of awareness twice emphasizes the wrongness of it.

This is a devastating moment for Lot's character. The man who once showed hospitality and some moral standing is now being manipulated by his own daughters. That night the older daughter lies with her drunken father, conceiving a child while Lot remains unconscious and unaware of what transpires.

Language and setting

The repetition 'he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up' (וְלֹא־יָדַע בְּשִׁכְבָהּ וּבְקוּמָהּ, velo yada beshivhah uvekumah) uses hendiadys—a rhetorical device emphasizing complete ignorance and unconsciousness throughout the entire act. The Hebrew verb ydʿ (to know) operates on multiple semantic registers simultaneously: Lot 'knew' nothing intellectually, could perceive nothing physically, and bore no moral responsibility in the technical sense—yet was nonetheless the active party biologically.

Significance

This verse crystallizes the tragedy of Lot's trajectory—the man whose hospitality and righteousness distinguished him in Sodom becomes unconscious (literally stupefied) while his own daughters use his body to their purposes. The narrative neither excuses nor condemns him personally, but it demonstrates how moral and spiritual dissolution renders one vulnerable to the most degrading outcomes. The act produces Moab, whose name (מוֹאָב, moab—etymologically debated but often interpreted as 'from father') encodes the incestuous origin in nomenclature itself.
