Genesis 19:22, in plain English

The angel urges Lot to hurry—he literally cannot begin destroying the cities until Lot is safely away. The town Zoar gets its name from this urgent moment of escape.

Time is running out. The angel is essentially saying, 'Move now—I'm waiting for you.' The angel urges Lot to flee with absolute urgency, explaining that the divine destruction cannot commence until Lot reaches safety—binding the execution of judgment to the completion of rescue.

Language and setting

The angel's insistence on speed reflects the imminence of the catastrophe; dawn is breaking (verse 23), and the window for escape is closing. The statement 'I cannot do anything until you reach it' is theologically pregnant—it establishes that divine judgment, while certain, is suspended pending the deliverance of the righteous, a principle consistent with 2 Peter 2:9 regarding God's capacity to rescue the godly from trial.
