Christ is not one option among many. He's the centre — and everything else reorganises around Him.
Paul writes to a church he did not personally found, likely established by Epaphras during Paul’s Ephesian ministry. After thanksgiving for their faith and love, Paul delivers the Colossian Hymn (vv. 15–20), a majestic christological statement declaring Christ as eikon (image) of the invisible God, prototokos (firstborn) over creation, and the one through whom cosmic reconciliation occurs via the cross. Paul then describes his own suffering as filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions—a provocative phrase debated throughout church history—and reveals the mystery hidden for ages: Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Colossae was a small city in the Lycus Valley of Asia Minor, overshadowed by neighboring Laodicea and Hierapolis. The Colossian Hymn’s language of thrones, dominions, and powers likely responds to local syncretistic beliefs incorporating Jewish, pagan, and proto-gnostic elements.
